Need high rez ability, and receptive material, and a dense black ink. Posjet material is good, there are others all over now from different manufacturers.
Sep software? Photoshop, Illustrator, Quark, In design, they all do it if you learn. the automated programs just speed it up if you don't know how.

Good hunting. go to SGIA New Orleans, you can see all the machines and products.

We have a MIMAKI JV-4 that will do up to 85line halftone. We use WASATCH SP 4.5 for the rip software. We use Chromaline ACCU-ART for the film. The ACCU-ART comes in rolls of up to 60" wide. The JV-4 will accommodate up to 63” of material to print on. It can be used for flat stock as well as roll fed applications.

Hope this helps,

If you are going to invest any significant amount of money in a printer for screen positives, then you really should take the time to find out if there is a printer out there that will make suitable banners for you as well. I can print some pretty niffty banners with my Epson 9600 and make films up to 44" wide. Yet there are even better machines out there for your purposes ( while maybe more expensive). Check out solvent printers and UV printers. They have some amazing abiltites.
