IKEA Issues Printed Electronics Innovation Challenges
Aims to transform operations with printed electronic technology.
IKEA has announced two printed electronic “open innovation challenges” focusing on digital communication carriers and e-labels, according to the Active and Intelligent Packaging Industry Association (AIPIA). AIPIA reports the company has shown interest in printed electronics as a way to transform its operations and establish new ways of creating customer value.
Through the e-label challenge, the company seeks to create blank electronic labels that can display different production information as needed. Possible approaches cited by AIPIA include pixelated displays, electrochromic displays, or layered solutions. The digital communication carriers challenge aims to find ways for IKEA customers to enhance their shopping experience through in-store media conveying product information via the user’s smartphone or tablet. AIPIA reports technologies such as RFID and NFC are encouraged.
